Green Economy: Dubai’s Vision

Planetary Development Institute has taken an active part in The World Green Economy Summit 2018 (WGES 2018) in Dubai. In its fifth year, the summit brought together scientists, politicians, and leaders of the largest financial and business institutions from all continents. Every year, the summit debates key issues of environmental policy: the expansion of international collaboration in this area; cooperation for progressive public and private investments; establishing the legal framework for regulating resource management; new mechanisms for introducing innovative green technologies; and renewed and alternative energy sources.

The summit was organized by the government of the Emirate of Dubai and the World Green Economy Organization established under the UN auspices three years ago. WGEO primarily aims to develop a package of measures to reduce the catastrophic consequences of global climate change on our planet.

The scientists collaborating with the Planetary Development Institute discussed the three key themes: green capital, digital technologies, and leadership and social engagement. More than 3,000 high-profile experts shared their knowledge and experience in online and offline debates at WGES 2018. The summit provided evidence of progressing “green economy”. More than 12,000 companies and non-profit organizations from 166 countries have already joined the UN Global Compact proclaiming the ten principles for the environmental protection and human rights. The UN Global Compact is also known as the main initiative of corporate social responsibility. Twice as many countries have agreed to the independent analysis of their achievements in this area.

How can we stimulate countries to adopt a green economy? WGES has traditionally generated many interesting and innovative debates on this issue. This year, the scientist and businessman Alexander Bezgodov has presented the initiative of the Planetary Development Institute, which he leads. (The proposals are described in detail in his monograph Planetary Rent as an Instrument for Solving Global Problems). The summit discussed the influence of developed countries on the world economy. Undoubtedly, multisectoral transition to “green economy” depends on investments in processing of industrial and household waste, “green” products, technology and infrastructure. According to the United Nations, by 2020, the world will have to mobilize $100 billion in order to soften the consequences of climate change in developing countries. How can we raise and effectively use a green budget?
