The main January event of the global business world is the World Economic Forum in the Swiss Alps, Davos 2019: delegations from one hundred and ten countries; three thousand political and business intellectuals; one and a half thousand transnational and international companies and firms; three hundred meetings, seminars and round tables. However, for the first time in a decade, the leaders of several leading powers could not or did not want to be in attendance.

As predicted by experts of the Planetary Development Institute, both in their official reports and at no-tie meetings, the participants of the World Economic Forum quite critically evaluated the prospects for resolving major global problems, strengthening the stability of the world, and ensuring sustainable development of civilization. The main trend of world politics is clearly outlined against the background of major trade wars and sanctions, crises of national elites and population protests, growing tensions in the ‘hot spots’. It is the lack of mutual understanding between the governments of the most influential states. The current rules of the world order are losing their pertinence, and key players are not able to agree on new ones.

The founder and permanent president of the World Economic Forum, Professor Klaus Schwab suggested discussing the formation of a global architecture in the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution calling for leaders and citizens together to shape a future that works for all by putting people first, empowering them and constantly reminding ourselves that all of these new technologies are first and foremost tools made by people for people.

The general mood at Davos 2019 was far from optimistic. Well-established economic ties are crumbling, trade barriers, on the contrary, are multiplying, and the world is bracing for a recession. The International Monetary Fund has prepared a report with a very low-key forecast of the future of the planetary economy. According to it, the growth of total GDP in the next two years will decrease by 0.2%. The main obstacles will include sanctions, high levels of sovereign debt, nationalist protectionist conflicts and Brexit. The controversy about its consequences for Europe and the whole world has not reached the ‘highest level’ - British Prime Minister Theresa May did not visit Davos this year. Her German counterpart Chancellor Angela Merkel focused on other issues saying that we are faced with challenges: populism and nationalist movements. We must confront them. We will fight to ensure that multilateralism is not limited to the European Union and become the international force that will help find answers to these challenges.

According to tradition, a special award was awarded to cultural figures and members of the show business for "achievements to improve the world". The UN Goodwill Ambassador for Refugees, Kate Blanchett became this year’s winner of the Annual Crystal Awards. In her speech, the famous actress noted that “almost 66 million human beings have been forcibly displaced around the world, and we see the fallout from the continued failure of world leaders to secure peace’’ urging everyone to commit themselves to finding ways out of this crisis.

The award was also presented to Indian actor Shahrukh Khan and British singer Elton John.
