The Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons is a multilateral international act developed by the UN Disarmament Commission. The goal of the treaty is to restrict the number of countries who possess nuclear arms, ensure that the countries fulfill their obligations, contain the possibility of a nuclear conflict, and develop ways of using nuclear energy peacefully. The treaty was developed by the UN Disarmament Commission and approved by the UN General Assembly. The treaty imposed an obligation on nuclear states to refrain from passing nuclear weapons and control over them to third parties and helping a non-nuclear state to produce or obtain such weapons.
