Start of the first automobile race around the world

In 1908, the two newspapers Le Matin in France and the New York Times in the USA organised a marathon motor race across the Bering Strait referring to it as the race from New York to Paris without the help of a ship. The car race took competitors from New York to Alaska – Siattle – Vladivostok – Irkutsk – Achinsk – Tomsk and along the highway through Russia to Europe.
