Labor Day

May 2020

May 1, 1886, American workers organized a strike demanding eight-hour day. The strike and the accompanying demonstration ended with a bloody fighting with police. In July 1889, the Paris Congress of the Second International in commemoration of workers striking in Chicago made a decision to organize annual demonstration on the 1st of May. For the first time the International Workers’ Day was celebrated in 1890 in Austro-Hungarian Empire, Belgium, Germany, Denmark, Spain, Italy, USA, Norway, France, Sweden and some other countries.

For a number of countries there is still a tradition to gather people under the trade union’s banners. But in majority of states it isn’t a political holiday, but Labor Day, a colorful summer holiday, when public celebrations, performances, fairs, peaceful marches and numerous entertaining events are held.
