International Happiness Day

March 2020

The International Day of Happiness (known as Happiness Day) is celebrated throughout the world on the 20th of March. The International Day of Happiness was founded on June 28, 2012 by the United Nations General Assembly. Pursuit of happiness is common to all people. The holiday is designed to show that happiness is one of humanity’s goals. The organizers call on all countries to try and improve the wellbeing of every individual on this planet. The UN encourages all member-states, international and regional organizations and civil society members, including NGOs and private individuals, celebrate the International Happiness Day through public awareness events. UN believes that economic development should be balanced, equal and comprehensive. This sustainable economic development model should result in the reduction of poverty levels in the world. To achieve a happiness level, the United Nations must sustain economic growth with social and environmental programmes. Interestingly, a small mountainous country of Bhutan was the initiator of this event. The Kingdom of Bhutan holds top position in Gross National Happiness Index, which measures the wellbeing level of people living in a country. The Fourth King of Bhutan introduced Gross Naitonal Happiness Coefficient as the nation’s unofficial philosophy.
