International Day of Mountains

December 2020
The UN General Assembly established International Day of Mountains in 2007 to call on the world community to hold events at all levels to raise public awareness of the need to develop mountainous regions of the world and help people living there. Mountains cover over one fourth of the planet’s landmass and play an important role in moving the world towards sustainable economic development and are home to almost 10 per cent of the world’s population. They do not only provide sustenance for 720 million people living in the mountains, but affect billions living at the foot of the mountains. We must not forget that mountains are a natural reserve for unique species of plants and animals and the source of all major rivers.
