International Day in Support of Victims of Crime

22
February 2020

This awareness day is meant to raise public awareness of the problems victims of crime face. Social rehabilitation of victims of crime has been a public issue since the end of the 20th century. In September 1985, the 7th UN Congress The seventh United Nations Congress in 1985 adopted the Universal Declaration of Basic Principles of Justice for Victims of Crime and Abuse of Power. For the first time in November, 1985 Assembly of the UN adopted the Declaration, securing universal principles for the protection of victims of crime and abuse of power. Several countries currently have laws aimed at the protection of citizens who suffered from criminal encroachments, their social rehabilitation, as well as compensation for moral and material damage. Worldwide, there are about two hundred assistance programmes for victims of criminal acts. These programmes help people cope with stress and getting over a crisis. They provide financial and moral support. Charity and human rights NGOs hold public awareness events, hotlines, conferences and fundraising events on this day to help victims of crime.  Politicians take part in them while legislators have a tradition of passing laws in support of victims of crime on International Day in Support of Victims of Crime.
